Railroad Fakes and Fantasies
It’s a real shame but there are many fakes and fantasy items to be found in collecting railroad memorabilia. Perhaps the most common are railroad switch keys because they are easy to fake and there are many Adlake blank keys available to the unscrupulous. Among the most recent we have seen are a Seaboard, an FEC, and a San Antonio & Aransas Pass Car key. These recently showed up in an estate and were purchased unknowingly by the buyer. Another common fake is a reverse glass ticket sign commonly sold up and down the US East Coast with a number of different railroad names. The Central of Georgia, Atlantic Coast Line, and Florida Central to name a few. Probably the most common fantasy set is a china condiment set with a butterpat, an individual creamer, and a mustard pot. They are usually seen with the Pennsylvana RR logo, KATY logo, NYC logo, and others. If you run your fingers over the logos, you will feel where the logo has been applied after the firing process and you can feel the edges of the decal. Although these are “cute”, they were never used on any railroad!
